Referrals for Fibroids & Heavy Menstrual Bleeding
If your family doctor has referred you for treatment of fibroids or heavy periods, please ask them to do a blood test to check your blood count (CBC) and iron levels (Ferritin) if you haven't done one in the last 3 months. If your hemoglobin is <120g/L AND ferritin is <30mcg/L), you have iron deficiency anemia. You will need to start oral iron supplementation.
For oral supplementation, you can start one of the following:
Ferrous sulfate 300mg once per day
Ferrous gluconate 300mg once per day
FeraMax 150mg once per day
Iron should be taken on an empty stomach with orange juice or Vitamin C 500mg tablet to maximize absorption.
